This August Bank Holiday, there are two opportunities to enjoy a Deloitte Street Child World Cup experience. The only difficult part is deciding where to go.

Bedfordshire:  Hinwick Hall, for the Brazilian vibed Festinho, with music, games and a laid-back festival feel all raising money for ABC – the Action for Brazil’s Children Trust, originators of the DSCWC Brazil Team.

Street child exhibition coming to the UK

UK supporters who missed out on the chance to experience the DSCWC art exhibition will now get the chance to see the work in a fantastic venue in London.

The Foundling Museum is hosting the DSCWC exhibition – One Voice:  artwork created and inspired by street children – from 14 September – 9 October.

The exhibition will be interactive and engaging, bringing the spirit of the DSCWC to the UK.

The Foundling Hospital was established in the 1700s to address the rapid growth of unwanted and abandoned children on the streets of London.  The Museum reflects the philanthropic support that the Hospital received from artists including Hogarth and Handel, displaying England’s first public art collection, and the largest private collection of Handel memorabilia.  Artists will be reflecting these historical parallels by incorporating works from the DSCWC throughout the museum’s permanent collection, as well as in a dedicated exhibition space.

Umthombo Captain Andile represents Street Children at FIFA World Cup

The City of Durban proudly hosted their opening FIFA World Cup fixture last night at the dazzling Moses Mabhida stadium. Germany v Australia welcomed an array of special guests including 17 yr old Andile Dladla representing not only our partner project Umthombo but all street children.

Andile: “I’ve always loved football and football has helped me through being on the streets…to go to a World Cup match in my own city was absolutely thrilling”

Our partner project Umthombo Street Children who have been particularly citing the rounding up of street children by Metro Police report that the situation is currently going well. Of particular success is their full engagement project at ‘Safe Space’ which has become a visiting hub for foreign fans and yesterday held a celebration party to involve street children in the opening day of Durban hosting it’s fixtures for the first ever African World Cup.

Lobbying for Street Child Representation

Last week, we wrote to Andrew Mitchell and Douglas Alexander – respectively the Secretary of State for International Development and the  Shadow Secretary of State for International Development.

We wanted to ask them to commit to specialised funding for street child organisations as an independent group rather than the current ‘trickle through’ funding street children currently receive.

Breaking news – Round Ups

Round-up footage broadcast on national news – view here

Following reports from our partner project Umthombo that the Metro Police in Durban have carried out round-ups of street children, South African national news channel ETV has broadcast footage it captured close to Umthombo of a Metro Police round-up.

This comes after a 6 week cessation of round-ups and a seeming end to the policy by the Metro Police in Durban. The Municipality has again re-iterated that round-ups of street children are not their policy so it is hoped that this was an isolated incident rather than an attempt to “clean” the streets before the FIFA World Cup in June. We will be watching closely.

We know that there are better, more humane, and more effective ways of helping children leave the streets. We are calling for the authorities to work closely with NGOs like Umthombo who have a track record of helping to reintegrate children and to stop round-ups.

The inaugural Deloitte Street Child World Cup saw teams work with specialist coaches to express themselves on the football pitch and with artists who enabled them to tell their stories in new and creative ways.
