Archbishop Desmond Tutu

The man, the legend.

Emailed us this morning to say “The Street Child World Cup demonstrates the tremendous potential of every single child, and especially street children, who are so often treated as less than human. I am proud that the first ever Street Child World Cup will take place in South Africa – and I urge all governments to guarantee the rights of this most marginalised group of their citizens to lives in which their promise is fulfilled.”

I could barely be more excited.  On a personal note, the fact that he also signed off his email “God bless you” has buoyed me today on a personal cloud of – well, of blessing. 

But more to the point, Archbishop Tutu has got to the heart of what we’re wanting to do – enable street children to live lives in which “their promise is fulfilled”.  With innovative, inspiring South African hosts, Umthombo Street Children, it’s utterly right that we begin that long journey in South Africa – a country which itself walked a long and painful journey to rights and justice.  Archbishop Tutu knows this – what an honour that he’s supporting us on our journey too.

It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view.

So said Archbishop Oscar Romero, a human rights activist from El Salvador in the 1970s.  As he so wisely said, “We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realising that.”

We can’t, by the end of the first street child world cup, in South Africa in March 2010, make the world a completely fair and kind place for all children.  We can’t rescue all street children from the difficulties of their lives on the streets – or the traumatic burden of what has put them there.

Here’s what we can do, though:

  • we can ensure that the voices of a group of street children are heard by people who can make a difference to their lives.
  • we can empower those street children to inspire others in their communities and enable their peers to speak up for their rights
  • we can put together some of the world’s leading street child charities – Umthombo, Casa Alianza, DePaul International, ABC Trust - so that together, they can share, learn, and speak together, so that their voices are heard

Actually, all of these things change some lives.  Back to Romero:  “This enables us to do something – and to do it very well”. 

March 2010, the first ever Street Child World Cup.  It won’t change everything straight away.  But it’s a great start.
