At Momentum Arts we believe that creativity and passion drive social change. We want to enable street children to tell their stories through art, sculpture and drama, and bring these stories to a global audience.
What will we do?
In preparation for the Deloitte Street Child World Cup, local artists are working with the children to explore themes such as “Identity” and “Places of Safety and Danger”. Their ideas will form the basis of our exhibition in March. During the Deloitte Street Child World Cup, an international team of artists will work with the children to create a unique platform for self-expression. They will create theatre, art and interactive installations to be exhibited in Durban Art Gallery from 21st March 2010 until July 2010. The exhibition will then tour in the UK.
Why are we doing this?
Street children struggle to get their voices heard. By developing new forms of self-expression, we give them powerful tools to reach new audiences and engage more people in our campaign.
Our exhibition will give the street children a chance to express themselves on a global stage. We aim for a hundred thousand visitors to the Interactive Street Child Experience at Durban Art Gallery. Experiencing the art and hearing the stories will contribute to changing public perception of street children, ensuring that our impact continues long after the World Cup has finished.
In addition, art is a valuable therapeutic tool. Allowing children to think and act creatively gives them the opportunity to truly behave like children and have fun; a rare experience on the streets. We hope that our arts programme will give the teams the space and time to reflect on this unique event.
