Fundraising
You don’t have to be a football fan to support the Street Child World Cup! Everyone can have fun raising funds to give street children a voice.
Any amount of money – large or small – will help towards:
- Transporting the children and their support staff to and from Durban.
- Providing the support needed to ensure that each child has a voice
- Looking after the children in South Africa by providing a place to stay, food, football coaching and refereeing
- Follow up after the tournament to enable the children use their experience in South Africa to help other street children.
Take inspiration from the SCWC and have a football or South African theme to your fundraising:
Football
- Hold a workplace or school 5-a-side tournament.
- Football skills competition (goals, keepy-uppys, 3 legged goal scoring). People pay to enter. See if you can get a local business, or your local football club, to donate prizes.
- Fantasy football: Create your own fantasy football league with friends or colleagues. People pay to enter a team, drafting it themselves, or picking them out of a hat – they then get points based on the performances of the players in their team.
- Wear your football kit to work Why not ask the boss if you can wear your team’s kit to work for a donation? There may be some team rivalry, but you’ll be united for a great cause!
South Africa:
- Bring and Braai. A braai is a South African custom – a combination of barbeque and social event. Family and friends meet, everyone brings food and it’s cooked on a communal grill. A braai should be casual and fun – organise games (football!) and / or provide music – something South African such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo should get everyone in the mood.
Caroline Beasley went along to a fundraising braai in Suffolk. She said “There was a great atmosphere and people seemed very happy to donate money in exchange for some South African food. Everyone loved the Street Child World Cup proiect – there’s something in it for everyone – football, children, South Africa… So, even if you only get half a dozen friends round for a barbecue, I’m sure they’d be up for donating a fiver.”
- Wear the flag! The South African flag is the only national flag to contain six colours as part of its primary design – blue, red, yellow, green, black and white. Why not ask the boss or teacher if you can wear your ‘fancy dress’ by wearing at least one item of clothing in each colour to work or school for a donation? You could end up wearing a yellow shirt with a green tie and one red sock and one blue. You will look very silly but it is for a great cause!
Or:
- Offer your services at an hourly rate if you are good at gardening, ironing, babysitting, cleaning. If you are a tidy person offer a de-cluttering service. Sell your services for the de-cluttering and take the ‘clutter’ to a car-boot sale.
- Organise a cake bake at your work place, church or school.
- Ask your friends around for a social with a difference. Everyone has clothes that no longer fit or that they wish that they had not bought. Have fun trying on the clothes and ask people to make a small donation for each item they take. You can also ask your friends for a small donation as entry to the evening.
- Ask a male friend, colleague or teacher to be brave and be sponsored for having their legs or chest waxed or their moustache and / or beard shaved. Take photographs before, during and after and post them on the wall to share the fun.
- Get your school involved. Discuss the Street Child World Cup during PHSE lessons, present at assembly or raise money at school as charity of the week / month / term
