Tanzania Street Child Team
How TSC Sports Academy got involved in the Street Child’s World Cup
‘Caretakers of the Environment, Tanzania’ is an NGO dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children throughout Tanzania.Mutani Yangwe began to set up Caretakers in 2005. In 2007 he became involved in the management of Kuleana Street Child’s Centre, registering ‘Caretakers’ as an NGO in the same year.
Caretakers’ immediate concerns were with emergency issues – shelter and food for street children. These could be provided by Kuleana Centre The next priority was education, which could be introduced through volunteers working at the centre, preparing the street children for reintegration into families and formal schooling. Once these foundations were laid, Mutani believed it was important for the children to develop life-skills through activities such as sports.
He explored the local community, trying to find out whether there were any opportunities available for vulnerable children to enjoy sports. However, he discovered that no training facilities, football grounds or programmes were in place.
Mutani understood the importance of sports and activities in a child’s development, teaching them team-work, leadership, organisation, ambition and allowing them to have fun in a safe environment. He was also frustrated by the idea that there was so much talent being wasted because vulnerable children were not being given the chance to shine.
‘‘Playing football with the children at the Centre showed me how much talent they have that was not being given the chance to develop.’’ Mutani.
In June 2008, while promoting ‘Caretakers’ in the UK, Mutani met Pete Kent, from Railway Children UK who told him about the Street Child World Cup taking place in Durban in March 2010. Inspired by the idea, he believed Tanzania had the talent to enter a team in to the competition. This gave impetus to his desire to establish a sport academy. When he returned to Tanzania, Mutani began to work on setting up the Tanzanian Street Children’s Sports Academy. He got permission from Saba Saba Primary school to operate the project on the Saba Saba grounds in Mwanza. The Tanzanian Street Children’s Sports Academy was born on March 7th 2009.
